HUMINT
HUMINT is, put simply, intelligence gathered from people. It can be strategic, identifying trends and new threats. It can be tactical, allowing us to develop investigations to dismantle organised crime groups, and it can be operational, leading to firearms recovery, safeguarding victims, and more. The NCA HUMINT department is always looking to utilise assets in innovative ways to support the requirements of the customer.
Integrated Communications Intelligence
Integrated Communications Intelligence (ICI) sits at the very front end of the investigative process. Ranging from Targeted Intercept Operations (TI), infiltrating the lives of criminals to collect and interpret their illicit plans, the Internet Data Unit (iDU) acting as pathfinders to facilitate new collection methods or Communications Data Unit (CDU) providing the next lead for collection/investigations, ICI is more than the sum of its parts. ICI is supported by the Criminal Justice Liaison Team (CJLT) which acts as the safety net for our licence to operate and the retention and disposal of material collected from what are the highest levels of intrusion into private life; the Policy and Futures Team.
Technical Operations (Tech Ops)
Technical Operations are responsible for developing and delivering innovative and cutting edge technical capabilities to provide intrusive and covert evidential gathering opportunities. Technical Operations function at the forefront of authorised intrusive surveillance capabilities in the NCA.
DICE
The online threat has continued to grow with new challenges that no longer require criminals to possess complex technical knowledge and sophistication to remain anonymous online and commit criminal activity.
The dark web Intelligence Collection & Exploitation (DICE) team collects and analyses intelligence and data in order to counter and disrupt serious and organised crime threats hosted in the dark and clear web or through the use of encrypted communication platforms and virtual currencies. It will focus on the highest harms online, upstream and internationally, while continuing to support the national effort to tackle a wide range of online criminal threats.
BaSS
BaSS specialists can offer a variety of techniques that can assist an investigation. With academic backgrounds in Psychology and professional experience in Intelligence, BaSS practitioners utilise both skill sets to implement psychological theories and evidence-based practices to aid NCA investigations.
