Senior leader biographies

Our leadership team sets the agency's strategic direction and provides operational oversight. Executive and non-executive directors bring decades of experience and expertise from across policing, government and the private sector.

 

Director of Intelligence: Steve Smart

 

Steve SmartSteve has had a career spanning more than 20 years working within government against a range of national security threats. For the majority of that time he has been focused against the international terrorist threat and worked closely with National Counter Terrorism Policing in the development and evolution of the CT Policing Network.

He has worked as an intelligence collector, analyst, assessor and investigator, as well as more recently leading and managing sections responsible for intelligence collection and exploitation.

Steve also worked in the private sector where he led the development of an integrated intelligence and investigations function in a major banking group. He has extensive experience of working with partners in the police, wider law enforcement and intelligence, both in the UK and overseas.

A graduate of economics from the University of Lancaster, Steve was made an OBE in 2003.
